Within the Distributed Renewable Resources Generation Programme, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has recently launched the Shams Dubai Initiative, which allows electricity customers to generate their own green electricity with solar PV panels, also connecting them to the power distribution grid. Any surplus not used on site can be exported to the grid, and offset from the customer consumption under a net metering scheme. The initiative implements Executive Council resolution number 46 of 2014, issued by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. DEWA has developed and published the regulations (including technical standards to ensure safe and reliable connection to the grid) and launched a certification scheme for PV experts and an eligibility scheme for solar equipment compliant with the technical standards.
