Solar Decathlon Middle East 2018

Solar Decathlon is an international competition in which universities from all over the world meet to design, build and operate solar powered houses. The houses use renewable energy as the only energy source and are equipped with innovate technologies that permit maximum energy efficiency. During the final phase of the competition, teams compete through 10 contests and assemble their houses in a main expo area and open them to the general public.

The Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) was created through a signed agreement between the Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Department of Energy of the United States Government in June 2015, in order to organise a sustainable solar house competition in Dubai in 2018 and 2020.

“Organising SDME is part of our ongoing efforts to achieve the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish Dubai as a global hub for sustainability and innovation,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Managing Director & CEO of DEWA.

SDME offers students a unique opportunity for learning, taking theory and putting it into practice. Students working on the project will be challenged to use their innovation capacity, and their ability to design and build an energetically self-sufficient solar house.

22 international teams, that involve 37 universities from 16 different countries, have been selected to participate in the 2018 edition of the competition. The teams will be showcasing their SDME Projects Models at the Dubai Solar Show 2017.
